Camera and Editing

Camera

Vlogging

My main camera is the Canon EOS M50 (Mirrorless). It films with image stabilization in 1080p at 60FPS, has great autofocus that tracks objects and faces really fast. It is compatible for mounting an external microphone and the best part: it's got a flip-screen so you can frame yourself while filming.

This camera is also a good start for someone that is interested in photography, because it's the cheapest mirrorless camera that you can buy that shoots RAW-photo's (CR3).

I use the standard lens, which is the EF-M 15-45 f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

Riding

For riding I use the GoPro Hero 7 Black action camera. It's probably the most popular action camera ever, and for good reasons. The image stabilization on this is AMAZING. You can go mountain biking, running, do whatever, and you will get smooth footage. The standard settings are set to take it out of the box and start, even if you don't know anything about filming. However, you can change them to get even better looking footage!

These are the protune settings I use:

  • Flat color profile: you can add contrast and color back in post, this will reduce pixelated images and blur.
  • Shutter: auto
  • White balance: auto
  • Iso max: 100, ISO max 1600
  • Sharpness: medium
  • Raw audio: off
  • Mics: auto

Accessories

Audio

The built-in microphone of the M50 is not meant for making good quality audio, so Canon made sure creators are able to mount a external microphone.

This is my setup:

  • I use the Rode Videomicro that attaches to the top of my camera and can be plugged in on the side. This microphone picks up sound in front of it, but everything behind or to the sides will fade, ideal for Vlogging.
  • The hairy thing on the top is called a deadcat. It reduces wind noise.

Tripod

This recognizable tripod is called the Joby Gorillapod 1K. 1K stands for its ability to hold camera's up until 1kg. This super handy little tripod can be used to set up your camera anywhere, not just on solid ground. I can mount it on chairs, my bike, on the ground and anything in between. This tripod is also big enough for vlogging. What I mean by that is when I stretch my arm, the camera is far enough for me to be in frame.

I also have a 360° timelapse mount that you can put on any tripod. It  turns 360° in 60min.

GoPro Accessories

On my previous bike, I mainly filmed with the chesty (the harnas that mounts the GoPro on your chest), but with the CB500X that's a little bit too low. Now I use a helmet chin mount. When I use the GoPro in-hand, I use the shorty (little selfi-stick/tripod)

I have a bunch of other GoPro stuff like extra batteries, different mounts for changing up the angles, waterproof cases, etc.,

Editing

Video

As far as video-editing software goes, I can be very short. I use iMovie, which is a standard editing program that's on any Apple device. This does the job for now. If I would upgrade, I'll probably switch to Final Cut Pro, which is a more professional version of iMovie.

Photo

For photo-editing I use Affinity. Many people automatically think of Photoshop or Lightroom. These are expensive options, because of their monthly subscriptions. Affinity has every tool that Photoshop or Lightroom has, but it's a one-time purchase (30€/$).
